Things I Amplify from the web

Web citizens trying to kill Internet Explorer 6

I agree. IE6 is a pain to develop and design for. Just upgrade already if you are using IE6.

Amplifyd from www.cnn.com
Some Web designers are staging an online revolt against an old version of Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser, which they say is hampering the ability of the Web to move forward in a cool and interactive way.

The designers say Internet Explorer 6, which was released in 2001 and since has been updated twice by Microsoft Corp., is crippling the Internet's potential and slowing down the online experience. They also blame IE 6 for giving webmasters a collective headache, because they have to write special "hacks" into Web code to accommodate an outmoded browser.

In recent months, several Web companies have launched sites devoted to the idea of undermining or killing Internet Explorer 6. The most recent site, called "IE 6 No More," has gained momentum this week on social-media sites like Twitter and Digg in part because a number of respected Internet start-up companies have signed onto the campaign.

Some Web developers are trying to weed an old version of Internet Explorer from peoples' computers.

Charges Against Henry Louis Gates Dropped

This reminds me of an In Living Color Michael Jackson skit:

MJ: Officer, can you please tell me if I'm black or white?

Officer: You're under arrest.

MJ: Well, I guess I am black.

Amplifyd from www.npr.org
Henry Louis Gates Jr. was arrested last Thursday at his home in Cambridge, Mass.
Disorderly conduct charges are being dropped against Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. who was arrested at his home last week after apparently being mistaken for a burglar.

Gates, a famous scholar of black history, was arrested last Thursday following his return from China and found his front door was swelled shut. He called his driver over to help. Someone saw them forcing open the door of the house near Harvard Square and called the police.

Gates walked to the screen door and before he could say anything he was asked to step outside, says Gates' lawyer Charles Ogletree, also a Harvard professor.
"It was clear the officer then understood what had happened," Ogletree says. "The officer nevertheless said we're investigating a break-in that's in progress.
It certainly didn't look good: arresting a world-renowned black scholar in front of his own house after someone mistakenly took him for a burglar. Read more at www.npr.org

Olympic hopeful opens brothel to pay for training

I think this guy missed the whole point of the Olympics, as well as Tae Kwon Do...

Amplifyd from www.cnn.com

(CNN) -- A cash-strapped Olympic hopeful in New Zealand says he has been forced to open a brothel to fund his bid for taekwondo glory in 2012, but officials say his entry into the sex trade could mean his exit from international sport.

The 23-year-old, who finished in the top 16 in Beijing after losing his first match, says he needs to raise $190,000 over the next two years.

But his brothel business has upset his sport's national governing body, which says it could hurt his chances of competing.

Campbell insists he should be entitled to compete as his Auckland business does not violate New Zealand liberal laws on prostitution.
"This is perfectly legal, so I do not see why I would wreck my chances," he said, adding that if people had other ideas how to raise the cash, he would be willing to consider them.
Logan Campbell represented his country in the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

Microsoft Office 2010 online for free, but with a catch…

Microsoft Office to go online — for free

Get this: Microsoft – the king of paid software – will announce today that it is going to give a version of Office away for free online. Both the online and desktop versions are scheduled to arrive in the first half of next year. Yes, you read that right. The latest version of its ubiquitous productivity software, dubbed Office 2010, will come as both a piece of software you can buy for your computer, and as a service you can access in your browser
Capossela told me that Microsoft has studied it closely, and Office Web Applications, the free, ad-supported version of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, will probably appeal to tightwads who weren’t going to buy a copy of Office anyway.Read more at bigtech.blogs.fortune.cnn.com

Yes indeed, Microsoft plans to release a free online version of Microsoft Office 2010.  However, they're late to the game and are planning on placing ads on the free version.  Would definitely like to see how this pans out, but if we know anything about Microsoft, this may not turn out too well.

Hip-Hop's Cash Kings 2009

Rap's richest aren't immune to the worldwide downturn, but top stars still find ways to rake in millions.

image

The Brooklyn-born rapper pulled in an estimated $35 million over the past 12 months, topping our annual list of Hip-Hop Cash Kings. It's far from the $82 million he made last year, but more than enough to reclaim the crown from 2008's monarch, 50 Cent. The Queens native drops to fourth place with $20 million, down from $150 million a year ago.

3. Victoria's Secret

School: UC Berkeley
Year: 2006

When USC's star basketball player, Gabe Pruitt, hit the floor for a crucial game against U.C. Berkeley last year, he brought more baggage than he even knew. In the fashion of Dateline's "To Catch a Predator," Cal fans had posed as an internet-honey from UCLA, aptly named Victoria, who Pruitt agreed to meet once he returned to L.A. -- or so we can assume from Pruitt's words: "I want to c u so bad." Like many online relationships, this one didn't go well: Cal fans broke the bad news mid-game, chanting "Victoria" and reciting his digits throughout the game. Pruitt shot 3 for 13 and USC lost by 11 points.

Can Apple police iPhone apps for porn?

Can Apple keep the iPhone app store clean?

(CNN) -- Nude photos and other potentially objectionable materials have been showing up in the iPhone application store in recent weeks, raising questions about Apple's ability to control iPhone content.

In the most recent example, a nude photo of a young woman, reported to be 15 years old, showed up on an iPhone application called "BeautyMeter," according to Wired.com and Krapps.com, an app review site.

The photo, which apparently was submitted by one of the photo-sharing app's users, prompted Apple to remove the entire mobile application from its online store.

10 Boilerplate Phrases That Kill Resumes

The 2009 job market is very different from job markets of the past. If you haven't job-hunted in a while, the changes in the landscape can throw you for a loop.

One of the biggest changes is the shift in what constitutes a strong resume. Years ago, we could dig into the Resume Boilerplate grab-bag and pull out a phrase to fill out a sentence or bullet point on our resume. Everybody used the same boilerplate phrases, so we knew we couldn't go wrong choosing one of them -- or many -- to throw into your resume.

Here are the worst 10 boilerplate phrases -- the ones to seek out and destroy in your resume as soon as possible:
